If you have a bank or savings account that you have not accessed for a long period of time, you can use a free lost account tracing service called “My Lost Account” to find accounts that might be dormant or forgotten. The service brings together the three tracing schemes of the British Bankers' Association (BBA), the Building Societies Association (BSA) and National Savings and Investments (NS&I), is free to use and can be accessed at via the url: www.mylostaccount.org.uk
The service offers a way to search for lost accounts by completing a single form, the information of which is then circulated around the majority of UK banks, building societies and National Savings & Investments (NS&I).
What is a lost account?
An account may be defined as 'lost' if you have not made any withdrawals or deposits for a set period (typically three years in the case of a savings account and one year for a current account) and the bank has not heard that you wish to keep the account open. The funds remain yours but may need to found after a long period of not having accessed the account. The most typical cause of an account becoming lost is a change of address.
The government's dormant assets scheme allows money in accounts that have been dormant for at least fifteen years to be made available for certain qualifying charitable and community causes. The original account holder can still get any money within the scheme back after providing satisfactory proof that it was theirs.
